Searching the Vanished

10 digital images, zine, video, and card game prototype
The vanished leave subtle traces, visible to those doubting what’s visible on the surface.
This journey of searching the vanished in Hung Hom started with a “supernatural encounter” shared with me on my way to the washroom—a conversation that pinned Hung Hom to my radar.
I began to walk around Hung Hom and found leveled slopes, an intriguing perimeter wall, a contemporary lotus fountain built six decades ago, and other interesting urban fabric.
All these—like a phantom of the vanished—prompted me to dive deeper into disappeared hills and streets.
This project interweaves site crawling and research into public records and oral history. This results in a series of works comprising digital images, a card game prototype, a zine, and a video made up of real-time GPS logs of may walks and forced detours on the past streets on the 1887 map of Hung Hom.
The deeper I dug, the more I realized that the past remains just beyond reach—records disappear, oral accounts clash, and memories fade.
The past seems so veiled. Can we really find where the pieces fit?

Faint Traces through a Veil: Whispering to the Skeptical
Digital images (A series of 10. See images above)
60x50cm each
Hills in Hung Hom have been leveled to make way for housing and urban development projects, leaving many to believe it was an area created solely by reclamation.
But subtle traces reveal themselves to the curious and skeptical eye. What I found during site crawls included the remains of both an unnamed hill in Lo Lung Hang within Northwest Hung Hom and Kwun Yam Hill, as well as what some claim to be Tai Wan Hill's remains. They all seem
veiled, revealing only a wavering outline.
More about the leveled hills: Check out the zine as well
Images above:
1-2: Remains of an Unnamed Hill in Lo Lung Hang
The perimeter wall of Marigold Mansions, where Shun Yung & Fat Kwong Streets meet in Lo Lung Hang, looks carved into the rocks. The rocks belong to a nameless, leveled hillside.
3-4: Lotus on Kwun Yam Hill's Remains
The lotus fountain was built in 1966 inside the Fat Kwong Street Garden No.1, evoking the leveled Kwun Yam Hill (Kwun Yam or Guan Yin is the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy often depicted holding a lotus or sitting on a lotus throne.)
5-6: Remaining Small Slopes of the Leveled Kwun Yam Hill
7-10: The Completely Leveled Tai Wan Hill
The site of the completely leveled Tai Wan Hill has become Hutchison Park since the 1990s. There's a 15m-high hillock in the park, rumored to be Tai Wan Hill’s remnant. Below the hillock is a turtle pond.

Walking in Hung Hom with the 1887 Kowloon Map
Video
6 mins 40 secs
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to walk with a street map made 139 years ago?
There were five streets running northeast to southwest in Hung Hom, according to the 1887 Kowloon map.
From NW to SE, they are: Temple St., Marsh St., Station St., Dock St., and Hill St.
I followed the 1887 Kowloon Map and walked on the five streets in Today’s Hung Hom, letting GPS and the Hiking Trail HK app record the forced detours.
