Countering artspeak generated by a washing machine
and its mind

回應洗衣機同佢個腦的陳述

2022

Video, 7mins 18 secs

Artspeak has drawn criticism and led two artists to publish a book titled International Art English.

Though washing machines don’t generate art statements, I imagine their swirling actions generate statements full of baffling “artspeak”, which appears non-sensical but they can be amusing at times.

While artspeak overwhelms audiences and drowns artworks, let’s get even by “captioning” them with images to highlight the language's obscure nature and perhaps the obscure nature of the artworld's operation.

Countering this "washing-machine generated" statement with images and footages is a means to empower myself as an artist and an audience, rather than ridiculing individual writers of those statements.

I consider this the counteractive power of art. The statement in this art video is a remix of fragments from statements found in events I visited before and on social media.
